Blog #???

This week we missed Monday because it was Columbus day. Yeah maybe we were celebrating someone who committed mass genocide but, a day off is a day off. Anyways on Tuesday we figured out how to convert Celsius to Fahrenheit. Until Tuesday I did not know that 0 degrees Celsius was in reality 32 degrees Fahrenheit.

This week we wrote a philotimo essay, on the same topic that we do every year. “How can you show philotimo?” “what does philotimo mean to you?” just the usual questions. This year I decided to write mine in Spanish.

We also started on our new book called “My Name Is Not Easy”. It’s about some kids who go to a boarding school because there are not many schools in their villages.

We worked on scientific diagrams, which was basically learning about science equipment and how to display them in drawings or pictures. Some rules about drawing that equipment include:

  • No 3D
  • No colors
  • Nothing can be floating

We are also doing this project with things called editorials. It’s where we write small persuasive essays. We just take something we want to convince people about and write about it in short little essays. In my case, I wrote about Plato uniforms and my opinion on them. We also are working on a baseball card project, where we make our own custom cards. I was not here most of this week and missed most of the work so I don’t have much to write about this time.

For math this week we did this thing where we took a 1×1 – 6×6 grid square and would count the squares in the shape. We had to find the pattern in the grids in order to solve bigger grids. For philosophy we learned about being Stoic, which is basically just not letting the little things bother you. We are almost done with The Alchemist. We have about 30 pages left. We did a Mentor Text project where we all made presentations on something we want to share with the class. We kinda made a sort of tutorial for the project. I made a presentation on how to raise a guinea pig. I also missed Tuesday because I went to shadow Depaul, which was okay.

We started reading The Alchemist, which has been okay so far. I recently also learned how to sharpen pencils with scissors. I’m pretty sure the tomato seeds we replanted have died. We also read a sort of response to “The Ones Who Walk Away From Omelas” (the story about the kids in the basement). The response was called “The Ones Who Stay And Fight”, which was just about fighting instead of removing yourself from the situation.

This week was an interesting week indeed. We read short stories about how fast time flies and children locked in basements. We also dissected a tomato that somehow had managed to sprout the tomato seeds while still in the tomato, and replanted the little seeds. We also learned a bit about finance. And we also wrote children stories.

That’s all for this week.

Week

We kept working on our canvas paintings. I think that I will make a landscape type painting. We also started a writing project where we have to write a one page essay on a fugitive slave law back in the 1850’s. People would capture colored people because they thought they were runaway slaves. Even the average citizen was legally obligated to help out the “agents” (which was just another word for police officers).

Those were the highlights of the week.

Mantis

This week we got a egg full of praying mantis. Did you know that the egg can hold 50-200 praying mantis. I wonder how small each one has to be in order to all fit in a single egg. We also measured ourselves and found out what was 1000 times smaller then us and what was 1000 times larger than us.

Constitution

Yesterday we took THE constitution quiz. The one we have been studying for for all this time. So I needed 64 questions right to get 90%, for a passing grade. I got 62. Its okay though because I was given the opportunity to correct those questions, which I did. I am very glad I don’t have to retake the quiz.

We had a substitute on Tuesday, and we read a science world article, and made a poster on it. I made a poster on meerkats, which was fun to do.

Week

This week I did some more Constitution which was interesting. We took a quiz on the Judicial Branch, which was also fun to learn about. We did a project where we take the squares with a weird name and we make fractions out of them. We took one block and said it was a fraction, any fraction we chose, and then we took smaller blocks and we would see how many smaller blocks would fit in the big block. Then we would find out the fractions and what the smaller blocks were i the fraction.

Also St.Baldricks

Crayons

This week we started doing a project where we would peel crayons, and melt them into a mold, which is pretty cool. We also studied about fractions and did this thing where we had to take 1/2, 1/3, 1/4 and 1/5 of any number which needed to make 20. What I did is i took 1/2 of 20, which was 10, took 1/3 of 18, which is 6, took 1/4 of 8, which is 2, and took 1/5 out of 10, which is also 2. 10+6+2+2= 20.
